Here’s a fun little story for ya:
Girl creates blog.
Girl writes blog.
Girl tells everyone about the blog.
Girl makes lists of “potential ideas for the blog”.
Girl takes potential ideas and writes drafts for the blog.
Girl takes THREE MONTHS to update the blog.
Girl is me, btw.
* hand up defensively * BUT LISTEN…
Ok so straight up, I’m about to go on and on about all of the many super valid * reasons * (read: * excuses *) I have as to why I couldn’t update the blog in THREE (fucking) MONTHS because “life is so hard” and “I was so busy” and “blah blah blah Iwanteverythinghandedtomeonasilverplatter”…You know. Typical privileged asshole stuff, so skip right on through to the bottom if you — like me — are tired of that kind of bullshit.
IN MY DEFENSE (here it goes the bullshit I was talking about)
I have a really hard time with…like…everything.
Keeping up, for me, is an ongoing struggle. And I don’t just mean the blog (because at this point, I’ve made that clear) I mean like, life…
Keeping up with client projects. Keeping up with invoices. Keeping up with social media. Keeping up with housework…blogs, projects, ex-partner, plucking eyebrows, back to school shopping, drinking coffee before it gets cold...everything is a struggle.
And when I’ve hit a certain point and decide “enough with the bullshit excuses, Mabz” and tryyy to take control? To FINALLY “keep up”?
That usually looks a bit like this…
Girl creates Big Girl Goals.
Girl creates Mini Goals list of the itty bitty steps needed to attain Big Girl Goals (juuust like all the super duper positivity-coming-out-the-ass, toothy-grinned, “I made 90 billion dollars last month just by following these 7 super duper simple steps AND YOU CAN TO” motivational pricks on the podcasts suggest.)
Girl creates MINI Mini Goals to cross off X number of Mini Goals off of the Mini Goals Big Girl Goals list by XX date.
Girl gets distracted by: * enter * social media/children/money woes/never fucking ending laundry/emails/having to warm up her coffee for the 7 hundredth time/Global Warming/life, in general/et cetera, et cetera…
Girl realizes that she forgot about “X blog post” and “X client project” and adds them to the Mini Goal List, too.
Girl gets distracted by: * enter * life, in general.
Girl ends (yet another) day having not accomplished her MINI Mini Goal of crossing of X number of Mini Goals from list.
Girl looks over list.
Girl gets overwhelmed…
Every. Single. Time.
Overwhelmed Girl = Procrastination. Always.
And you’d think that by 29 Girl should have (would have, could have…) learned this lesson!
Lord knows she has P-LENTY of “learned lesson” examples to pull inspiration from.
Like the time a due date arrived “out of no where” and she had to stay up through the night to complete a seating chart.
Or the time she forgot to send the invoices and didn’t get paid for an entire month.
Or maaaybe the time she missed a really amazing job opportunity because she refused to acknowledged her growing inbox and didn’t reply to an inquiry on time.
And the NUMEROUS times she turned (yet another) page of her agenda and realized that none of the Mini Goals (much less Big Girl Goals) she had created were going to be crossed off this month…again.
Because she got overwhelmed and procrastinated.
It’s a tough cycle to break. And it’s especially tough when you know better.
And Girl KNOWS BETTER.
Yet…it happens over and over and over again.
(This is the no more bullshit part of the post I was talking about…)
This is not from the “potential ideas for the blog” list and it certainly doesn’t paint the best light (especially from a potential client perspective) but it’s 3 months in the making and THIS GIRL DOES KNOW BETTER than to let another agenda page go by…
So with that,
Girl writes blog post.
Girl POSTS blog post.
Girl crosses Mini Goal off the list.
